WE PROTECT THE BIODIVERSITY OF OUR SEA

  • In the past 60 years the Mediterranean
    has lost
    over
    40%
of its large predators and marine mammals

  • 75% of assessed fish stocks are overexploited

  • Because of destructive fishing
    practices
some species and habitats are disappearing

  • The loss of
    biodiversity
makes the Mediterranean ever more vulnerable to climate change

The data and facts speak clearly: the Mediterranean, once teeming with biodiversity, is now sick and depleted.

OUR CAMPAIGNS

MARINE RESERVES

The Mediterranean is the most overexploited sea in the world. To turn this situation around, at least 30% of its waters need to be fully protected.

Based on MedReAct’s proposal in 2017, the largest marine reserve of the Adriatic Sea closed to bottom fisheries was established in the Jabuka/Pomo Pit.
Our work promoting the creation of marine reserves to protect the Mediterranean has continued ever since.

INDISCRIMINATE FISHING

Overfishing is bringing fish stocks to the brink of collapse and damaging marine ecosystems.

To stop the loss of biodiversity, urgent measures are needed.

We fight against destructive and illegal practices that cause the depletion of the Mediterranean Sea.

SPECIES AT RISK

Because of overfishing and loss of habitats 12% of fish species and 40% of sharks, rays and chimaeras are at risk of extinction.

We have already lost 13 species of sharks. Our objective is to protect vulnerable species and depleted fish stocks.
We take action and promote solutions to ensure the recovery of Mediterranean biodiversity.
