What we do

We defend
the Mediterranean from Destructive fishing

DEFENDING THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

We fight for the protection of marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean, the world’s most overexploited sea.

The Mediterranean Sea is a global biodiversity hotspot. Although it covers only 0.8% of the Earth’s ocean surface, it’s home to 17,000 marine species.

This unique ecosystem is under attack. And it’s declining at an alarming rate.

In recent decades, due to the intensification of fishing, 90% of the Mediterranean’s large sharks have been lost. Vulnerable species such as bamboo coral are at risk of extinction.

75% of assessed fish stocks are subject to overfishing.

This shocking figure gives the Mediterranean the sad record of being the most overexploited sea on the planet.

Promoting its recovery is more urgent than ever.

Saving the mediterranean Now

The Mediterranean’s ecosystem is being destroyed before our eyes

Excessive and harmful fishing is killing its biodiversity

We need to act now, by expanding marine reserves and stopping the plundering of the Mediterranean Sea

Species at risk

WE PROMOTE THE RECOVERY OF FISH STOCKS AND MARINE ECOSYSTEMS

7.5% of known marine species live in the Mediterranean Sea.

This extraordinary biodiversity is at risk. Today, 75% of fish stocks are overexploited and once-plentiful marine habitats are disappearing.

Marine reserves

WE PROMOTE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NETWORK OF MARINE RESERVES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

We gather the best scientific research and transform it into concrete actions.

We promote the protection of sensitive habitats and vulnerable species through the establishment of marine reserves, such as Fisheries Restricted Areas (FRAs).

Destructive fisheries

WE DOCUMENT AND EXPOSE ILLEGAL FISHING

Illegal fishing is killing the Mediterranean Sea.

To fight it, we document and expose illegal practices that harm marine biodiversity and deplete fish stocks.
