WE WORK TO PROTECT THE BIODIVERSITY OF OUR SEA

  • In the past 60 years the Mediterranean
    has lost
    over
    40%
of its large predators and marine mammals

  • 58% of assessed fish stocks are OVERFISHED

  • Because of Destructive fishing, sPecies and habitats are disappearing

  • Biodiversity loss makes the Mediterranean ever more vulnerable to climate change

The Mediterranean Sea, once teeming with life, is being destroyed by human impact.

Our campaigns

DESTRUCTIVE FISHERIES

Overfishing is damaging marine ecosystems and bringing fish stocks to the brink of collapse.

To stop the loss of biodiversity, we need to act now.

We fight destructive and illegal fishing that is depleting the Mediterranean Sea.

Marine reserves

The Mediterranean is the most overefished sea in the world. To reverse this, at least 30% of its waters must be fully protected.

In 2017, thanks to MedReAct, the largest marine reserve in the Adriatic Sea was established, in the Jabuka/Pomo Pit.
Our work to create marine reserves across the Mediterranean has continued since.

Species at risk

Because of overfishing and loss of habitat, 12% of fish species and 40% of sharks, rays and chimaeras are at risk of extinction.

Thirteen species of sharks and rays have already been wiped out in the Mediterranean. We need to protect the vulnerable species that remain.
We take action and promote solutions for the recovery of marine biodiversity.
