Mission

The Mediterranean Sea has been recognized as one of the global biodiversity hotspot. Although it covers only 0.8% of the global ocean surface, it hosts a unique ecosystem with 7% of the world’s marine species – including 750 species of fish.

Many of the species found in the Mediterranean Sea are endemic and at-risk. Sharks, seagrass meadows, coralligenous reefs are all part of this rich and unique ecosystem that is degrading at an alarming rate due to climate change and human activity.

According to the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, 75% of the assessed Mediterranean fish stocks are overfished.

Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated fishing (IUU) is considered one of the biggest threats to the recovery of the fragile ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea.

The establishment of a wide network of no-take zones (areas where no fishing activity is permitted) would support species repopulation and biodiversity restoration.

MedReAct’s mission is to catalyze action for the recovery of Mediterranean marine ecosystems by ensuring a long-term, fair, and sustainable use of the resources of our common sea.
