Have you ever truly listened to the Mediterranean?
Its waters, once teeming with life, now hide a desert. Overfishing, climate change, pollution. Every wave carries the silent scream of a sea on the brink of collapse. This is no longer a distant warning. It is time to listen. It is time to act. The future of our sea also depends on you.

MedReAct - IN ACTION FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN
We stand against overfishing and illegal fishing. We fight for the creation of marine reserves. We work for the protection of endangered species and fragile habitats that are vanishing before our eyes.
A SEA TO DEFEND
The Mediterranean is now one of the most overexploited and threatened marine regions in the world
The Mediterranean covers less than 1% of the global ocean surface. Yet it holds one of the richest tapestries of marine life on Earth. From sea turtles to dolphins, coral gardens to the precious Posidonia oceanica, this unique ecosystem is home to thousands of species found nowhere else. But this vibrant sea is under siege.
EXCESSIVE. DESTRUCTIVE. UNSUSTAINABLE.
Industrial fishing is pushing the Mediterranean toward ecological collapse.
Over 40% of large predators and marine mammals have vanished in just 60 years. More than 58% of fish stocks are overexploited. Commercial species like hake and shrimps, are in steep and dangerous decline.
Sharks, dolphins, and manta rays are often caught and killed unintentionally. Coral reefs, gorgonians, and seagrass meadows are torn apart by trawling nets, leaving behind a desert where biodiversity once thrived. Just 0.1% of the Mediterranean is truly protected. That’s not enough.
Close your eyes. Dive beneath the surface. Feel the deep unfolding around you. See the trawl nets scarring the seafloor - crushing coral gardens, annihilating marine life, leaving behind devastation. This is the reality. This is what we must change.
WHAT MEDREACT IS FIGHTING FOR:
To stop illegal fishing that depletes marine resources and undermines sustainable livelihoods
To protect endangered species and habitats from the impacts of intensive fishing
To establish a network of marine reserves, the last refuges for Mediterranean biodiversity
The Mediterranean is a wealth of biodiversity, home to 17,000 marine species, 7.5% of those found globally. Yet only a tiny fraction of its waters are truly protected. Threatened by climate change, pollution, intensive and illegal fishing, the Mediterranean is losing its biodiversity.
