Dear Mediterranean Action Network partners,
In the lead up to UNOC 2025, MedReAct in cooperation with free diving world champion Alessia Zecchini has sent a strong message: #France must fully protect from bottom trawling the Gulf of Lion Fisheries Restricted Area (FRA), one of the most overexploited regions of the Mediterranean.
World champion Alessia Zecchini performed a free dive off Marseille, calling on France to permanently close bottom fishing in the Gulf of Lion Fisheries Restricted Area (FRA), and to take urgent action to protect the most vulnerable ecosystems of the Mediterranean.
Wearing a diving suit with the message “PROTECT-ENFORCE-RESTORE” under the French flag, Alessia Zecchini dived 40 metres in the archipel of Frioul, near the only Fisheries Restricted Area established by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), where bottom trawling is still allowed in the large majority of the protected area.
With MedReAct, Alessia Zecchini is urging President Macron to implement its own commitment to protect 5% of French Mediterranean waters by 2027, by starting to permanently protect the FRA.
Without immediate action to fully protect this critical area, President Macron is undermining its credibility at the United Nations Ocean Conference, #UNOC25.
