GFCM Forum on Fisheries Science in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (Fish Forum), Antalya, 22 February 2024
In 2024, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is set to agree on long-term management measures for the critically endangered European eel in the region. MedReAct and FishSec have joined forces to promote the recovery of European eel in the Mediterranean and beyond.
European eel has been listed as Critically Endangered by IUCN since 2008 and recruitment is now at less than 10 percent of historical levels.
For 2024, the scientific advice on fishing opportunities is zero catches for all life stages in all waters.
It is therefore extremely important to agree on long-term measures to aid the recovery of this species, which is still exploited in most Mediterranean countries.
If you are attending the 2024 GFCM Fish Forum, join our side event on good practices to recover this iconic species.
