{"id":13758,"date":"2025-11-05T09:39:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T08:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medreact.org\/?p=13758"},"modified":"2025-11-05T11:14:40","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T10:14:40","slug":"medreact-and-fishsec-statement-on-european-eel-at-the-16th-session-of-the-compliance-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medreact.org\/en\/medreact-and-fishsec-statement-on-european-eel-at-the-16th-session-of-the-compliance-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"MedReAct\u00a0and\u00a0FishSec\u00a0statement at\u00a0the 16th\u00a0session\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Compliance\u00a0Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/medreact.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_9555-1.mov\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Distinguish delegates,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>since 2018, the Mediterranean region has been moving ahead on the management of European eel, adopting some of the most progressive measures to support the recovery of this critically endangered species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the status of European eel remains extremely worrisome, with abundance dropping to less than 10 percent of its historical levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On behalf of the European Eel Alliance, MedReAct and FishSec therefore urge CPCs to fully and speedly implement the long-term eel management measures adopted by the GFCM last year. Full implementation, reporting, control and compliance are fundamental to supporting the recovery of this iconic species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this end, the 45th session of the GFCM requested the Compliance Committee to assess by 2023, the implementation of European eel annual fishing closures and of the recreational fishing ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this task regrettably was not carried out in 2023, we acknowledge the compilation of the pilot compliance summary table presented at this meeting.
