With the use of 4 research boats, Archipelagos combines field research with close cooperation with the local communities that form the foundations for targeted conservation actions. Archipelagos\u2019 international multidisciplinary team combines field research, in cooperation with leading universities and organizations, with active <strong>conservation work <\/strong>by which <strong>local communities<\/strong> play an important role. Archipelagos has been working for 25 years at sea and in coastal island regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We focus on various fields of research and conservation, including<strong> marine mammals<\/strong>,<strong> coralligenous habitats<\/strong>, <strong>posidonia seagrass meadows<\/strong>, <strong>fisheries<\/strong>, <strong>plastic pollution<\/strong> and terrestrial biodiversity research and conservation. They support over <strong>1,800 species <\/strong>and play a key role in maintaining the productivity of our seas. They are found between <strong>50-250 metres deep<\/strong>, and are estimated to exceed <strong>7000 years of age<\/strong>. Although these habitats are protected under International, EU, and Greek legislation, the<strong> lack of enforcement of existing regulations <\/strong>allows ongoing damage from <strong>destructive bottom trawling<\/strong>. Existing legislation surrounding coralligenous habitats <strong>cannot be enforced <\/strong>without <strong>accurate mapping<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">However, the current common-practice methodology to map<strong> Coralligenous habitats is time consuming <\/strong>and costly. As a solution, the Archipelagos Institute has developed a <strong>rapid-assessment mapping technique<\/strong> combining scientific research at sea with local ecological knowledge. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>By using a wide range of novel Geographic Information System (GIS) technology (multi beams, wide-band echo sounder and Remotely Operated Vehicles), Archipelagos has been able <strong>to successfully identify<\/strong> and <strong>map coralligenous <\/strong>and <strong>associated habitats<\/strong>. This ongoing process is being successfully applied in the Fourni island complex, where robust coralligenous areas have been identified and mapped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">Archipelagos is promoting targeted actions aiming to urgently promote the designation of the <strong>first ever Greek \u2018No Trawling Zone\u2019 <\/strong>near Coralligenous habitats on the island complex of Fourni.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In this difficult effort, the contribution of the coastal fishermen is invaluable.
